MSA UBC Presents: International Food Expo (IHFEX)

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu (May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be with you),

The Muslim Student Association at UBC is cordially inviting you to our very first International Halal Food Expo or otherwise known as IHFEX, being held March 20-24, 2017 during Islam Awareness Week! IHFEX will be the first of it’s kind on campus, where we will be showcasing cuisines from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures. Muslims come from all walks of life, and from different regions of the world. It is our hope that you will come and take part in experiencing culture and cuisine from a few selected countries we have chosen for this year. Our aim is to show that even though we all come from different backgrounds and countries we all share a common belief on how food should be prepared. The word “halal” means permissible in the arabic language. To be permissible meat is prepared in the most humane way possible. Halal food also is any food that is naturally grown or obtained naturally from the water. Also did we mention it is completely FREE! So what are you waiting for!

Come experience a fun-filled IHFEX and try Afghani, Bangladeshi, Malaysian, Pakistani and Persian cuisine.

MSA UBC Presents: Islam Awareness Week 2017

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu (May the peace, mercy, and blessings of God be with you),

UBC’s Muslim Students’ Association is proud to announce its annual Islam Awareness Week, being held March 20-24, 2017! This highly anticipated, annual week-long event brought to you by UBC’s University’s Muslim Students’ Association provides everyone a chance to explore one of the biggest and fastest growing religions.
Heard a few things from the media about Islam? Confused about what the Muslims follow? In our ever growing multicultural society, it is crucial to truly understand each other and it is important to get the correct information from the right sources. Islam Awareness Week aims to bring you an exhibition by your fellow classmates to make Islam easy to understand. The week will feature dynamic booths and activities across the Student Nest. A perfect opportunity for curious minds to come together, learn and ask questions.
Islam Awareness Week (IAW) has been taking place in many cities across the world since the 1980s, each year with a different theme. The main aim of IAW is to promote social cohesion rather than dwelling on differences, aimed at opening dialogues about their way of life, developing contact with individuals and institutions, promoting social interaction and celebrating art and culture.

Our theme for 2017 is #fiVe, the Five Pillars of Islam.
Different sections of the exhibition include calligraphy booth, games, try on the hijab stand, listen to the Quran booth, a question and answer booth, and a #fiVe pillars booth, with a different pillar each day. Plus, there will be a lot of ethnic food (yes, free food!), attire, activities, and all the cultural diversity you can absorb in one day!
We will also be hosting a world-renowned speaker, Yasmin Mogahed, on February, March 24, 2017, to end off IAW and to answer any questions you may have.
